Type any word — your name, a made-up word, this week's spelling list — or a whole phrase, and hear it spoken aloud in a crunchy retro voice. Numbers and contractions speak too. Anything beyond the 500+ bundled words falls back to on-device speech, so every word speaks.

Spell

SpellSynth says a word — you spell it. Three mistakes and it gives you the answer, then tries a new one.

Mystery Word

The classic hidden-word game. Pick letters until the word reveals itself; six wrong guesses and it's over.

Say It

Listen-and-repeat for pronunciation practice. Hear it spelled letter by letter, then say it aloud.

· THREE VINTAGE VOICES ·

Two decades of speech-synthesis history, on every word.

Pick a voice character in Settings. Each one draws from a different era of speech synthesis, applied to every word you hear — bundled or live-typed — and caches separately so toggling is instant after the first play. As of 1.2.6 the 1978 LPC voice is cleaner and more even — every word sits at a consistent level with no glitch on hard sounds.

1968 Odyssey Deep-baritone monotone with a deliberately slow cadence. Fixed-pitch formant synthesis at ~65 Hz, time-stretched 1.6×. An aesthetic homage to late-60s sci-fi AI voices.
1978 LPC The original Speak & Spell character. A 10-pole LPC vocoder driven by the actual TMS5220 chirp ROM — the same algorithm Texas Instruments shipped in the toy. Buzzy, granular, unmistakable.
1986 DECtalk Style Fixed-pitch impulse train through formants extracted from your input. Modelled on the Klatt-style synthesis that defined Hawking's iconic computer voice. Deliberate, monotone, emphatically computery.

Prefer no retro stamp? A Default voice gives you clean system speech with no extra processing — for when you just want clear pronunciation.
